EMPTY CLOSETS
By Michael Marczak
First steps are the
hardest
Coming out of the dark
Learning not to
cringe
At every hateful remark
Taking their blows
And keeping in stride
I learn to wear them
As my own sign of pride
It’s like sand in my
eye
This banner they wave
But soon I learn
There are new roads to pave
Unacceptance
Is the greatest fear of all
But a man’s stature
Is his capability to stand tall
Freedom
Is the nature of the soul
And my closets are
empty
But my dining room is full
