"The Closets are Empty ... The Dining Room's Full"

This poem was sent to me February 28, 2002 after he had read my autobiography.

EMPTY CLOSETS
By Michael Marczak

 First steps are the hardest
Coming out of the dark

Learning not to cringe
At every hateful remark

Taking their blows
And keeping in stride

I learn to wear them
As my own sign of pride

It’s like sand in my eye
This banner they wave

But soon I learn
There are new roads to pave

Unacceptance
Is the greatest fear of all

But a man’s stature
Is his capability to stand tall

Freedom
Is the nature of the soul

And my closets are empty
But my dining room is full
